HRC was posted as a young officer of the foreign service of Bangladesh to the then Pakistani High Commission in India. When West Pakistan and East Pakistan engaged in the liberation war, HRC defected and became the Head of the liberation movement in India. He developed a special relationship with the Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. He traveled around India with the Gandhi family to raise domestic awareness and support for the liberation war in Bangladesh.
Following his success, HRC was posted as an ambassador to Germany after the war. During this time, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of the nation, was shot and killed with most of his family members, and a Military regime was established. HRC heroically helped the two surviving daughters, Sheikh Hasina, the current honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and Sheikh Rehana, her younger sister. Having done so, he faced severe repercussions when it became apparent that he was on the army’s ‘kill’ list due to his actions.
HRC was later awarded critical roles in the Foreign Service, including Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and the United States, followed by Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh. He ended his stint in the Government as the most illustrious Foreign Minister in Bangladesh since he was chosen to be the 41st President of the United Nations General Assembly and later Speaker of Parliament for the first Awami League Government.
His legacy lives on in Mishal Karim, who, although not directly engaged in politics, is a recognized and admired partner for any ventures or projects involving the Government of Bangladesh.
